VirusScan 8.6.1 is anti-virus software that can be installed on both Intel and PowerPC (universal) Macintosh computers running Mac OS X 10.4.6 or higher and Mac OS X 10.5 or higher (Leopard).
If you are using Mac OS X 10.3.x, download and install the Virex 7.7 software.
Texas State has a license that allows current faculty, staff and students to VirusScan anti-virus software for Macintosh users. In order to download this software, you will need to have an active Texas State NetID.
This software is for use by current TxState users only! It is illegal to distribute this software to Non-TxState users!
NOTE: When you download a file from this page, you will be prompted for your Texas State NetID and password.
You now can delete any intermediate files on the desktop that end in ".gz" or ".zip". Eject the VirusScan 8.6.1 virtual disk that is on the desktop and you can now choose to delete the VSM861TXST.zip and VirusScan 8.6.1.dmg on your desktop since they are only needed for installation.
Run the VirusScan 8.6.1 application. Click the Preferences toolbar button (looks like a light switch). The Preferences window will appear. You should see a small window:
Click the More Options button to see more choices. If your computer becomes too sluggish:
- Select On Access Scanner in the Preferences window.
- Change the Scan files: pop-down button from Always to Write Only.
Refer to the VirusScan 8.6 User Guide for guidance on adjusting the On Access Scanner.
Hot fixes are released by McAfee periodically to address minor issues in certain computing environments. Hot fix files should be applied only on the advice of McAfee Technical Support, and only when you are actually experiencing the issue being addressed by the hot fix. Hot fix files should not be proactively applied in order to prevent potential product issues.
Please contact the IT Assistance Center if you have an issue with VirusScan 8.6.1 that is addressed by a hot fix. If you are using VirusScan 8.6 and experiencing an issue addressed by a hot fix, it is recommended that you update to VirusScan 8.6.1 and then apply the hot fix.
