iTerm

iTerm is a free open source Mac OS X native terminal emulation program that can be used to connect to the OpenVMS mainframe computer systems (Academic and Admin) using the SSH protocol.

Note: If you already have iTerm installed, you can download the Install iTerm files program application to run it and install the SSH connection scripts and the iTerm preference file. These iTerm files allow you to make encrypted connections to the Texas State computer systems.

System requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 or higher.
  • Select the Apple menu and About this Mac to determine your Mac OS X version.

To install the iTerm for Mac OS X client software:

  1.  Download iTerm.zip (999K, ZIP).
  2. If you don't see a iTerm folder on your desktop, double-click on the file you downloaded iTerm.zip to create that folder.

  3. Drag the iTerm folder to the Applications folder.

  4. Open the iTerm folder in Applications and drag the iTerm application icon to your dock.

  5. Double click on Install iTerm files to install the support files.

  6. Click the Run button to install the support files.

It is essential that you run the Install iTerm files so the you are able to connect to the Texas State computer systems and that the keys are defined properly when you use a program such as Access.

Expose keys must be disabled or changed:

If you are using Mac OS X 10.3 or higher, it will be necessary that you change the key definitions used by the Expose feature. Select the Apple menu, then System Preferences... and open the Expose icon. It is recommended that you can re-assign each Expose function to a function key by holding down a modifier key. For example, to assign Shift-F9 to the All Windows Expose function, you will hold down the shift key while selecting the pop-down button next to All Windows in Expose. If you select "-", you will disable the calling of that Expose function using a key stroke.

Using the iTerm client application:

  • Double click the icon iTerm application to run it.
  • By default you will be connected to the administrative computer system tegan.txstate.edu.
  • Log in as normal using your NetID and password.
  • Function keys should be defined as in the classic Better Telnet application.
  • If you want to connect to the academic computer system, type Control-C at the username prompt. The terminal window will close. Select the Shell menu and then New Window and then Academic.
  • If you want to connect to the academic computer system by default when you open iTerm, click on the iTerm menu and select Preferences... In the Preferences window, select the Bookmarks tab, highlight the Academic line and check the Default Session box. Click OK.
  • When you are done, type log to disconnect from the mainframe computer system. The terminal window will close but you will need to still quit Iterm by typing Cmd-Q.

Key definitions:

    F1 Gold
    F2 (not used)
    F3 Cancel/Rub Word
    F4 Main
    F5 Exit (Control-Z)
    F6 Alt Character
    F7 Prev Field (Control-H)
    F8 Erase Line (Control-J)
    F9 Insert/Overstrike
    F10 Help
    F11 Do

Note: Use Control-W to redraw the screen if needed.

Printing in Access:

  • Once in the Access program to print from, type Gold-P which is F1-P.
  • Tab over to "CHANGE SETTINGS" and press DO Key (F11)
  • Tab over to "PORT PRINTER" and press the DO key (F11)
  • Tab over to "MACINTOSH" and press the DO key (F11)
