Using the Unencrypted Wireless Network

Windows

Requirements:

  • Windows Vista, XP, or Windows 2000.
  • A wireless card (802.11 standard compliant)
  • All critical updates and patches applied to your operating system.
  • Within range of a Texas State access point.

Access to the open (unencrypted) wireless network [broadcast SSID "TexasStateUniversity"] is restricted to web-based services.  These include activities like general Internet browsing and the use of Texas State web-based applications like BobcatMail, CatsWeb, TRACs, Blackboard, and the SAP Portal.

It is strongly recommended that you use the Texas State encrypted WPA wireless network. When you are connected to the encrypted network, all data sent over the air is automatically encrypted so that whatever you type or view can not be seen by others if the data is intercepted.  If you must use the unencrypted network, please read about the hazards of using the unencrypted wireless network.

To learn how to establish a encrypted wireless connection instead, see the encrypted wireless network setup instructions for Windows 2000/XP or Windows Vista.

Instructions for Windows:

  1. Turn on your laptop and login into Windows as usual.
  2. Insure that your wireless card is on and getting a signal. To make a connection, double-click the wireless icon in the system tray (lower right opposite Start menu), select TexasStateUniversity and then click Connect. You will be warned that the connection is not secure/encrypted, click Connect anyway. After the connection is established, close the window.
