Hazards using the Unencrypted Wireless Network

ATTENTION!!

It is recommended that you use the encrypted Texas State wireless network if possible so that all the information sent by your computer over the "air" will be encrypted. However, to use the encrypted WPA wireless connection, your computer's wireless card must support WPA or WPA2 Enterprise security.

Note: If you don't see TexasStateWPA in the list of available wireless networks then encrypted wireless service is not available yet for your current location.

To learn how to configure your computer to use the encrypted Texas State University wireless network, visit the Windows XP/2000, Windows Vista or Mac OS X encrypted wireless instruction web pages.

If you are unable to use the encrypted wireless network because your wireless card and/or software driver does not support 802.1X and/or WPA enterprise security, please avoid the following actions while using the unencrypted wireless network:

  • Don't use FTP programs
  • Don't use Telnet programs.
  • Don't use email clients using POP or IMAP. BobcatMail is secure and can be used.
  • Don't type any password into a web page text box unless the address line (URL) begins with "HTTPS://".

The above programs require your Texas State password or other passwords to be sent over the air. If you are using the unencrypted wireless network, your password will be in the clear and could be captured by someone else using software that captures passing network traffic. Therefore if in doubt don't type your password or send any private and/or sensitive data while using the unencrypted wireless network. Consider upgrading your computer's wireless capability to 802.1X and WPA security capable so that you can use the encrypted WPA wireless network instead.
