The Texas State wireless network provides Texas State users with wireless access to resources available on the campus network and the Internet. Technology Resources has implemented an advanced wireless “mesh” network that provides wireless network connectivity to virtually the entire main campus, both indoors and outdoors.
Texas State's wireless network provides increased mobility and convenience but does not offer wireless users as much bandwidth capacity and performance consistency as the wired network. For this reason, Technology Resources strongly discourages desktop computer users from abandoning their wired connections simply because wireless access is now available to their desktop devices. A wired connection is still much preferred whenever and wherever available.
The open (unecrypted) wireless network [broadcast SSID "TexasStateUniversity"] is restricted to web-based services. These include activities like general Internet browsing and the use of Texas State web-based applications like BobcatMail, CatsWeb, TRACs, Blackboard, and the SAP Portal.
To access non web-based applications and services in addition to web-based services, wireless users will be required to connect to the University’s WPA encrypted network [broadcast SSID "TexasStateWPA"]. To use the encrypted wireless network, the user must have a valid Texas State NetID and password. Examples of such services and applications include SAPGUI, the ACCESS menu, and E-mail/Calendaring using Outlook and Entourage.
The old encrypted network [broadcast SSID "TexasStateUniversity(Encrypted)"] is being phased out. Please use the instructions for the WPA wireless network above.
