Windows Dialup Modem Instructions

Windows XP Dialup Modem Instructions

If necessary, first install the modem and its driver software according to manufacturer's instructions.

  1. Click on Start in the lower left corner

  2. Click the Control Panel icon.

  3. Click Network and Internet Connections.

  4. Under Pick a Task, click on Setup or Change Your Internet Connection.

  5. Click Setup in the upper right-hand corner of the window to bring up the New Connection Wizard.

  6. Click Next. Choose Connect to the Internet and click Next.

  7. Choose Setup My Connection Manually and click Next.

  8. Choose Connect Using a Dial-Up Modem and click Next.

  9. For the ISP Name, type in Texas State and click Next.

  10. The Wizard will then prompt for the ISP's phone number. Type in 2450000 for a local call, 15122450000 if you are calling long distance (not free), or 50000 if calling on-campus for the phone number and click Next.

  11. You are then prompted with Create this Connection for:

    Choose Anyone's Use if you would like anyone who can log on to the computer to access to your Internet connection.

    Chose My Use Only if you would like the connection to be available only to you regardless of who logs on to your computer.

  12. The Wizard will prompt you for your ISP's Username and Password. Type your Texas State NetID and password. Click Next.

  13. Completing the New Connection Wizard will now appaer. Click on Add a Shortcut To This Connection To My Desktop

  14. Click Finish

Windows 2000 Dialup Modem Instructions

First install the modem and its driver software according to manufacturer's instructions.

Then click on Start, Settings, Network and Dial-up Connections, then double click on Make new connection.

The network connection wizard will begin, click Next to continue. and then check Dial-up to the Internet.

then click Next. Now choose I want to set up my Internet connection manually or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN).

Click Next. Then check I want to connect through a phone line and modem

Click Next and then enter the phone number 2450000 for local, 15122450000 for long distance (not free), 50000 for on-campus and uncheck Use area code and dialing rules.

Click the Advanced... button to check those settings.  Click the Connection tab, the connection type should be set to PPP and and Logon procedure should be set to None.

Here is what it should look like:

Click the Addresses tab to check those settings.  The IP address should be to set to Internet service provider automatically provides one.  The DNS server address should be set to My ISP automatically provides a Domain Name server (DNS) address.

Click the OK button (if in the advanced screen), then click Next and enter your Texas State NetID and password.

Then click Next and leave the default name of Connection to 2450000.

Then click Next, and select No to "Do you want to set up an Internet mail account now?".

Click Next and check the setting To connect to the Internet immediately if desired and
finally click Finish.

Now simply click on the newly created desktop connection icon to make a connection.
