Mac Dialup Modem Instructions

Mac OS X Dialup Modem Connection

  • To configure your Mac OS X computer to access the Texas State dial up using a modem, from the Apple menu, select System Preferences...
  • Click on the Network icon.

TCP/IP Configuration

  1. Select the TCP/IP tab.
  2. Leave the Location: pop-up button set to Automatic.
  3. Change the Show: pop-up button to Internal Modem or USB Modem
  4. Change the Configure: pop-up button to Using PPP.
  5. Click the Apply Now button to save the changes.

PPP Configuration

You will need to configure the PPP panel:

  1. Select the PPP tab.
  2. In the Service Provider: field, type in Texas State.
  3. In the Telephone number: field, type in 2450000.
  4. In the Account Name: field, type in your Texas State NetID (example: bb1007).
  5. In the Password: field, type in your Texas State password.
  6. Check the Save password box if you don't want to type in your password each time you connect to the Internet.
  7. Click the Apply Now button to save the changes.

PPP Options

You may want to configure some of the PPP options:

  1. With the PPP tab still selected, click the PPP Options...button to display the options window.
  2. Under Session Options, select or deselect those options as desired. One option that you may want to deselect is Disconnect If Idle for x minutes. You can remove the check if you don't want to be disconnected or you can increase the number of minutes before being disconnected. Another setting you might want to check is Connect Automatically when Starting TCP/IP applications. If this is set, your Mac will dial out when you run an Internet application like Internet Explorer and no connection has been established yet.
  3. In general, it is not recommended that you change any of the settings under Advanced Options.

Modem Configuration

  1. Select the Modem tab.
  2. Set the pop-up button next to Modem: to the select you modem. In most cases. this will be something like Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90). If you are using an external USB modem, you will need to select it from this pop-up button after installing the software that came with the modem.
  3. Specify the other settings as you desire (Sound on or off, wait for dial tone, show modem status in menu bar).
  4. Click the Apply Now button to save the changes.

Network Ports

These instructions assume that you will be connecting to the Internet using a modem. When the Automatic setting of the Network Panel is used, a connection to the Internet will be attempted using any available network port (not just the internal modem). If you are using a modem, it is therefore recommended that you specify the Internal modem as the first network port.

To change the order of the network ports, change the Show: pop-up button to Active Network Ports. Next select and drag the line with Internal Modem to the top of the list. You may also choose to deactivate a network port by removing the check next to it.

Connecting to the Internet

At this point, you can quit the System Preferences and run an application such as Internet Explorer to connect to the Internet. If you chose not to save your password, you will be prompted for it before the modem dials to make the connection. You can also connect to the Internet by selecting the telephone handset menu icon located on the upper right side of the menu bar and selecting Connect.

Note: If you have the Software Update preferences set to Automatically check for new updates, your computer will attempt to connect to the Internet to check for new updates periodically. You may want to turn off Automatic Software Updates to prevent your computer from connecting to the Internet on its own. You can always open Software Update and manually check for new software updates.
